Terms of Service
Complete legal terms governing your use of our zero-knowledge encryption platform.
1. Agreement to Terms
By accessing, browsing, or using Minus11 (the "Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). This is a legally binding agreement between you ("User", "you", or "your") and Minus11 ("we", "us", or "our").
If you do not agree to these Terms, you must immediately cease all use of the Service. Your continued use of Minus11 constitutes acceptance of these Terms and any future modifications.
2. Eligibility & Account Creation
To use Minus11, you must:
- Be at least 13 years of age (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction)
- Provide a valid email address for account creation
- Create a secure password for authentication via Firebase
- Not be prohibited from using the Service under applicable laws
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials. Any activity under your account is your responsibility.
3. Nature of Service (Zero-Knowledge)
Minus11 is built on the Zero Knowledge architecture. This architecture has specific implications:
No Access
We provide encryption tools but cannot access your plaintext data at any time.
No Keys
We do not have, store, or transmit your encryption keys to our servers.
Password Recovery
As long as you remember your password, you can re-derive your key on any device.
4. Free Service & No Warranties
Minus11 is provided free of charge and will remain free forever . We do not charge subscription fees, and we do not display advertisements.
Because the Service is free, it is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to:
- Warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose
- Guarantees of uptime, availability, or data integrity
- Warranties that the Service will be error-free or uninterrupted
5. Encryption & Key Management
Minus11 uses AES-256 client-side encryption. By using Minus11, you acknowledge and agree to the following:
- Password-Derived Key: Your 256-bit encryption key is derived from your login password using 50,000 PBKDF2 iterations
- Local & Transient: Your encryption key is re-derived locally whenever you log in
- Sync: Your notes are recoverable and syncable on any device as long as you remember your password
- Secure Storage: Keys are stored in your local browser session and cleared upon logout
No Key Loss: Unlike other services, Minus11 does not rely on a single device-stored key. Your data is for your eyes only, but it's now as robust as any modern login system.
6. Sharing Features
Minus11 allows you to share individual notes via unique URLs that include the decryption key as a URL fragment (#). By using this feature, you acknowledge:
- Anyone with the share link can decrypt and read that specific note
- Share links should be treated as sensitive information (like passwords)
- You are responsible for controlling who receives share links
- We are not responsible for unauthorized access resulting from shared links
7. AI Summarization Feature
Minus11 offers an optional AI Summarization feature powered by Groq Inc. using Llama language models. By using this feature, you acknowledge:
- The plaintext content of the selected note is temporarily sent to Groq Inc. for processing
- This is the only time your note content leaves your device in unencrypted form
- Groq processes the data in real-time and does not store it or use it for AI training
- You should not use this feature on sensitive or confidential notes
- We are not responsible for Groq's data handling practices
8. Third-Party Infrastructure
Minus11 relies on third-party services for core functionality:
- Firebase Authentication: Google Firebase manages user authentication (email/password)
- Cloud Firestore: Google Firebase stores encrypted note data (ciphertext only)
- Groq Inc.: Optional AI summarization processing
We are not responsible for service interruptions, data loss, or security breaches caused by these third-party providers. All data stored with Firebase is encrypted ciphertext that cannot be decrypted without your local encryption key.
9. Data Retention & Deletion
Your encrypted notes are stored indefinitely until you delete them. You may:
- Delete individual notes at any time
- Delete your entire account, which will remove all associated encrypted data
Deleted data is permanently removed from our database and cannot be recovered. Due to our zero-knowledge architecture, we cannot verify or decrypt deleted content.
10. Prohibited Uses
You agree not to use Minus11 for any unlawful purpose or in any way that violates these Terms. Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to:
- Storing, transmitting, or sharing illegal content
- Violating intellectual property rights of others
- Attempting to reverse-engineer, hack, or compromise the Service
- Using the Service to harass, threaten, or harm others
- Attempting to access other users' encrypted data
- Overloading or disrupting the Service infrastructure
Because we cannot monitor your encrypted content, you are solely and legally responsible for everything you encrypt and store. We reserve the right to terminate accounts suspected of violating these Terms.
11. Intellectual Property
All intellectual property rights in the Service, including but not limited to software, design, logos, and documentation, are owned by Minus11 or its licensors.
You retain all rights to the content you create and encrypt using the Service. We do not claim ownership of your notes or data.
12. Service Modifications & Termination
We reserve the right to:
- Modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service at any time without notice
- Update these Terms at any time (changes will be posted with a new "Last Updated" date)
- Terminate or suspend accounts that violate these Terms
We are not liable for any losses resulting from service modifications or termination. If we discontinue the Service, we will provide reasonable notice when possible.
13. Limitation of Liability & Disclaimers
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, MINUS11 AND ITS DEVELOPERS, OPERATORS, AND AFFILIATES SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR:
- Loss of data due to forgotten or lost encryption keys
- Unauthorized access to your device or browser storage
- Service interruptions, downtime, or infrastructure failures
- Data corruption or loss caused by third-party providers (Firebase, Groq, etc.)
- Any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages
- Loss of profits, revenue, data, or business opportunities
Your use of the Service is at your own risk. We provide the tools for encryption and storage, but you are responsible for managing your keys and data.
14. Governing Law & Dispute Resolution
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable laws. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall be resolved through binding arbitration or in courts of competent jurisdiction.
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
